If you travel internationally often, you need to check your residential status for the financial year. Income tax is levied based on two key principles: source of income and residential status. The residential status determines how much and where you owe taxes, so it's essential to correctly declare it in the income tax return.
An individual is considered a Resident if they have stayed in India for more than 182 days during the financial year OR have stayed in India for 60 days or more in the current year and 365 days or more in the last four financial years.
Other conditions help determine if you qualify as an NRI or Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident.
Steps to update residential status
- Navigate to Profile Icon > View Profile
- Under Personal details update the Residential Status
- If you're an NRI, you'll need to provide additional details, such as citizenship status, Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), etc.
If you don't have TIN, then you can add passport number as well.
